TIP: Tax Assessor Scam

A new scam has been discovered in the North Jersey area. The scammers have been targeting residents and stating that their tax bill has not been paid. At that point, the caller will say that the problem can be solved if the resident gives their credit card information. For most residents, when there is any issue with their tax bills, they want to remedy the situation as soon as possible. Here are some easy ways to avoid this scam:

  • Never give your credit card information over the phone
  • A tax assessors will never call and ask for payment over the phone
  • Always call the tax assessor’s office when there is an issue with you bill before you give out personal information
  • If you receive this call, be sure to call the tax assessor immediately afterward in order to verify if they actually called you or if it was a scam

Scammers are continually finding new ways to get your money. If you ever receive a call in which they state you owe money, always be sure to follow up with the company to verify it is actually a call from them. If it seems like a scam, it probably is. It is always best to exercise caution whenever someone calls you asking for personal information.
