Rooney and DePhillips resolution designating Stephen Hawking Remembrance Day advances

TRENTON, N.J. – A resolution sponsored by Assemblymen Kevin J. Rooney and Christopher DePhillips establishing an annual Stephen Hawking Remembrance Day cleared the Assembly Science, Innovation and

Technology Committee today.

“Stephen Hawking overcame physical adversities to become the greatest scientist of our time,” said Rooney (R-Bergen). “He made countless contributions to our understanding of the universe, gravity, black holes and other phenomena. Known for his sense of humor and love of life, he brought a sense of fun and adventure to the field of science and became an inspiration to us all.”

The resolution designates March 14, 2018, to memorialize Hawking’s life and achievements. Hawking passed away on March 14 of this year, but that date has additional significance. March 14 is recognized as National Pi Day, the global celebration of the value of the mathematical constant, pi. That day also celebrates the birthday of Albert Einstein.

“This recognition was earned by Hawking’s profound contributions to science and disability rights, but his most lasting achievement was making science accessible and interesting to the public,” said DePhillips (R-Bergen), a member of the Assembly’s science committee. “He was a scientific rock star to young people who are following his footsteps into the challenging fields of science, technology and engineering.”
