Consumer Tip: Beware of QR Code Scams!

As technology has advanced, so has the ability to get information and make payments from our smartphones and other personal handheld devices. Scammers are now putting QR code stickers in public spaces in an attempt to steal identities, payment information, and personal data. These predators can use malware, viruses, or payment scams to accomplish their fraud.

It is highly advisable to be aware of these security threats and only scan QR codes from reputable sources. Beware of QR code graphics that look like they are not supposed to be there or were not added professionally — especially on parking meters, where many scammers are taking advantage of unknowing drivers and stealing their money and information. If you are unsure, it is best to use caution.
