Consumer Tip — Beware of Phone Scam!

It is an unfortunate reality in today’s world that people will look to scam others out of money. This is the latest phone scam to hit communities in our area — and I wanted to make sure you are aware of it in case you receive one of these phone calls.

Scammers are contacting residents and posing as law enforcement officials. The scammers will spin a story involving a witness subpoena and a contempt of court arrest warrant. The scammer then offers the target an opportunity to pay a “civil penalty” in lieu of a court proceeding. The target is instructed to make payment via Zelle.

Please note these scammers will “spoof” their phone numbers to fraudulently appear to be legitimate law enforcement phone lines on a caller ID screen. If you receive one of these calls, please contact your (real) local police department.
